frequently asked questions
Why would you do this?
We cover our initial motivations here. Don't judge.
WHEN EXACTLY DID YOU GO CRAZY?
We plotted and planned seriously for about 6 months prior to pulling the trigger and quitting our jobs. We finished up our gigs and left our Seattle lease in October 2017, lugged our shit "Beverly Hillbillies"-style from Washington through Southern California and eventually to Phoenix, Arizona through November, and remodeled our home on wheels through early December.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
We purchased a 2008 DRV (formerly "DoubleTree RV" before they got sued) Mobile Suites 32TK3. It's about 33 feet long and clocks in around 17,000 pounds. It's a big, heavy-duty fifth wheel trailer (fifth wheels are typically a bit bigger and taller than bumper pull travel trailers), but it's also a happy medium - spacious enough for us to live in (mostly), but short enough to fit into some smaller spots like national park campgrounds.
We knew we wanted a rig built for full-time living, and DRVs have THICC walls (significantly thicker than typical RVs at 3.25, with residential insulation), a washer and dryer, and a bunch of other amenities that make it comfortable and durable. Thanks to Mortons on the Move (who own the same model trailer) for their tour and help as we were picking out our rig.
HOW DO YOU PULL... YOUR HOUSE?
17,000+ pounds is a lot of weight to drag around, so we knew we'd need a diesel truck, ideally with dual rear wheels. We found a sweetheart of a deal on a 2011 Ford F350 that fit the bill. It's rated for over 20,000 pounds (when pulling a fifth-wheel), and we're glad we went for as much truck as we did. We constantly see people towing massive "toy hauler" trailers with three axles and heavy cargo with single rear-wheel trucks, and we're thankful for the stability of the dually.
But, a Trailer? Really?
Downsizing your life and being able to move it on a whim is fairly freeing. If you're opposed to the word "trailer," you can refer to Free Real Estate as a tiny home, I guess. It is a trailer, though..
Where are you headed?
Our first instinct was to try to do an entire loop of the United States within 2018. We re-evaluated our plan in April and decided we'll go about our travels a little slower and stick to the western states until next year. Otherwise we'd be racing through a ton of things we'd like to see and kind of defeating the purpose of living life slowly.
Why 'Uproot?'
We had nice, stable lives before this and wanted to shake things up - we completely uprooted all of that to do this, HEH.
